A great movie to watch on St Patrick Day! This classic is set in the Ireland country side and about an elderly Irishman and his friendship with the wily King Brian, King of the Leprechauns. This was one of my favorites as a kid! The ruggedly handsome Sean Connery stars in it as the replacement groundkeeper for the Lord Fitzpatrick’s summer house. This movie was very early in his career and Pre-Bond, but he was still able to get the girl at the end of the movie! Swoon!
This movie is full of Irish lore, music and humor! King Brian is always trying to trick Darby and he’s usually able to stay one step ahead of His Highness. Despite their tricks, they’re always there for each other. Darby teaches the villagers to respect the leprechauns and keeps their spirits alive, and you’ll have to watch the movie to see how King Brian tricks Darby from death.
I love this movie, and not just because of the drop-dead gorgeous Sean Connery. But I’m going to wait a few more years before I let my kids watch it. The Banshee was TERRIFYING as a kid! Nightmare fodder! So unless your kids are used to watching Zombies or the sort, I don’t recommend watching this one yet.
The kids were able to partake in the holiday themed food though. I made my mom’s quick and Creamy Potato Soup. Which is always a hit in our house! Her recipe is the perfect way to warm your belly on a cool March evening. The kids and I also made Magical Marshmallow Treats! My daughter loved adding the colorful marshmallow bits (which we found in Walnut Creek Cheese in Walnut Creek, Ohio) to the already sweet marshmallow mix. Then she finished decorating them with even more marshmallows and sprinkles. She said it tasted like a magical rainbow!
How do you celebrate St Patricks Day? Is there another St Patrick themed movie that you watch every year?
